Man’s Best Friend ≠ Dog’s Best Friend

For the many years I’ve been in practice as a holistic doctor for people, I have always been intrigued with healthcare for dogs and cats. I have continued to experiment with my own dog Harry continuously doing research, learning, and investigating on my own about what is really going on with the pet industry, veterinarians, and dog food companies. I guess it was not so surprising to see that the misinformation, negligence, and outright greedy money-driven people in this industry are actually causing quite a bit of harm to our best friends. I do want to say that I am not a licensed veterinarian but I am a healthcare professional and I continue to do the work to help my dog and others to be as healthy as they possibly can be. So I want to touch on a few key issues and give everyone something to think about. Then you may do your own investigations and come up with your own conclusions.

Let me first start by saying that although French bulldogs are well known for their health problems and overweight bodies, I have been told by all of our vets that Harry is the healthiest, happiest, most youthful dog they have seen, even by bloodwork results. So what are some of my choices and secrets?

Secondly, let’s have a quick talk about vaccinations. Ponder this one; when you immunize children (with the exception of seasonal viruses, etc.), they create their own antibodies and are immune for life. That is the purpose of a vaccine. To create a memory in the immune system to help fight future exposures by familiarity and antibody support. Why would one think we should vaccinate our pets every single year, with the same exact antibodies? Well the truth is, the veterinary association realized years ago that it brings more business into their doctors’ offices on an annual basis, and gives them more opportunity to find other things going wrong with your dog. But at what cost? My Harry was vaccinated for the first year, and never again, because it is NOT necessary. It is harmful and shortens dogs’ lifespans, period. There are actual titer tests that can be performed on your pets every few years to make sure that they are still carrying active antibodies at a safe level, just in case you are worried about that. As for doggy day-care facilities, if your vet writes a note excluding him from shots, he will be allowed into day-care. And the idea of heart worm monthly medication is also horrible as it is actually an internal pesticide with terrible side effects. The flea/tick medications that you rub into the neck of dogs… well that’s a whole other ball of disaster as well. The long term effects of these things are staggering. There are natural treatments and preventatives for all of these issues.

Dog food in general is absolute garbage for our dogs. Pure dry kibble is the worst thing for them. A few indications that it’s not doing much for the dog, is if they are actually pooping almost as much as the amount of food being eaten. If they are pooping more, it means very few nutrients are actually being absorbed by the dog’s digestion, so most of it just goes back out as trash. Also, if your dog has irregular pooping schedules, constipation, diarrhea, foul smelling poops, it means their intestinal health is seriously at risk. I made a choice years ago to switch my dog to a raw food diet (Stella & Chewy’s® and Primal™ are great examples). There are no grains, sugars, fillers, or artificial additives in their food. Dogs do NOT need potatoes, rice, starches, and most certainly gluten or sugar in their diets. Dogs are just like kids: if you expose them to healthy foods, they will take to them. Likewise, if you do not ever give your dog table food (especially junk food), they will never know what they’re missing. I will say that Harry loves carrots, cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes, arugula, apples, pears, and most of all avocados, which are super healthy for dogs just as they are for humans, contrary to popular belief… Yes, it’s a wives’ tale that it’s poisonous for dogs! Lastly, overfeeding dogs/cats is the number one cause of illness and death in pets, so stop feeding them scraps, snacks, and treats. It’s only making them fat and basically killing your best friend.

What else does Harry get in his food?  He takes a probiotic every single morning (Rx Biotic Powder) with his raw food. He cycles twice a year through a few months of an immune system support supplement (Liquid Immuno Drops). For dinner, he has good fats in his food like olive oil or avocados. He has cardiovascular support (Ubiqinol – Mercola) and an amazing antioxidant (Spirugreens – Mercola) as well.

A few personal Dr. Dardano tips:

If your dog gets diarrhea after going to dog parks or eating something off the street, one of my most successful remedies is to add 1-2 droppers full of colloidal silver to his water/food for a few days and increase the probiotics to twice a day in his meals for at least a week. This has been very successful for Harry. That being said, if you try this and the dog’s health doesn’t improve steadily, take them to the vet!

Do not have your dog sedated for teeth cleanings (yes, you need to have their teeth cleaned). Many diseases begin with oral hygiene, but there are plenty of people out there who do sedation-free dog teeth cleaning treatments and it is just as effective as the other, without putting your dog at risk.

• Dogs need a rotational diet and many of their allergies come from eating the same food for prolonged periods of time, so changing their food every 3-4 months is ideal. Also, two of the foods that most commonly cause allergies for dogs are turkey and chicken. That’s right. Stay away from them!

• Nylabone® products are actually severely dangerous for dogs! They can get lodged in their intestinal tract and there is nothing that can be done to save them. So please avoid those rubbery toys!

• Don’t neuter your dog prior to 1 year old, as you are cutting off their hormone supply and stunting their body’s development in a critical stage.

• Make sure you span out the first year of their vaccines as much as you can, and never bring your dog to the vet on an empty stomach when they’re sick or dehydrated for his shots. The reason for this is that the likelihood of negative reactions is greater.

A New Year’s Resolution

As a holistic physician, January is always an exciting month for me personally and in my work. Many patients come to me at the beginning of each year, with grand hopes for change. What is it that makes some successful and others are still running the same cycle, year after year, without achievement?
After ten years of practice, and observation, I have come to this conclusion…..

1. Set a Realistic Set of Goals and A Specific Plan to Achieve them
Write each thing down on a piece of paper with a pen (not on the computer), phrase each thing in present tense as if it is already happening: i.e. “I am fitting so nicely in my skinny jeans and enjoy wearing them on the weekends.”, “my new office has the most spectacular views and the most uplifting energy”.

2. Let go of the Thought of Sacrifice
Many people feel that when they have to stop eating certain foods like dairy, gluten, sugar, etc, they are being deprived of something, its unfair to them, but this thought pattern creates negative feelings, and negative behaviors out of self entitlement somewhere along the way. Instead adopt a philosophy of letting go of the hurtful, damaging substances that are taking away from your health and happiness and embrace self respect that you have made choices to better yourself and look forward to a long, healthy happy life.

3. Instead of Giving Up, Give Out
Similar to the Catholic tradition of Lent, where they all give up something “bad” for forty days, it is of much greater benefit to take up doing something “good”, which will potentially create a new positive habit, lifestyle, food choice, exercise routine, etc. Just giving something up temporarily, creates a glutton at the end of the journey because your holding onto the idea of the old as some sort of treasure hunt.

4. Be Wiling to Let go of the Old
Part of creating space for the new choices in life, is letting go of the old ones and making room. Cut some cords with dysfunctional relationships, say goodbye to old friends that bring you down, clean out the closets, donate old clothes, furniture, books, things that clutter up your life and your home. If weight loss is a goal, absolutely, positively give away ALL the old clothing that is too big for you, it is a MUST.

5. Be compassionate with yourself
This is not an easy journey, and it take strength and courage, so be gentle with yourself, and sit with the feelings, evaluate where your at, and praise yourself for doing the work. Enjoy the steps along the way, a the journey is where its at, there is no end point at the finish line.. this is life!

Breaking Free from Disempowering Friendships- A Necessary Part of our Process

This is a tough subject to approach, but the question here is how many times do we all look at long term friendships and wonder why we are still in them? Is it nostalgia, comfort with the known, or just a fear of being alone?
The truth is that friendships are also relationships, and sometimes one has to stop and look closely at what a friendship with someone else is bringing into our life. Many times, as we move forward in life; grow, change, expand, and evolve, we find that others around us are no longer in sync with who we are today.
All relationships, romantic, family, and friendships, are learning lessons. They are experiences that we need to have. These people are all our teachers on the path of life that we are taking. But what happens when one is no longer serving our highest good and perhaps even impeding on our growth towards our best good?

It is just as necessary to clean out the closet of friends we carry with us our journey as it is to clean out our closets in the spring. The more space you make in the closet, the more room there is for new possibilities and new friends that are moving in the same direction as we are. The key here, is to gently and kindly let go of the old ones that no longer resonate, with love and compassion for their own journeys.

As I have done extensive work with another mentor of mine, Robert Wolinsky, who is an expert in the process of cord cutting and spiritual growth with his clients, I realized that I was running a similar pattern with various people in my life, old friends, romantic relationships, even family members. As I continued down the journey with Robert, it became so clear as I released old patterns of dysfunction and disempowerment, that several relationships began to disintegrate rapidly as I saw these patterns replayed over and over again in my life. Remember a handful of true, honest, friends that partake in our lives and put equal amounts of love and effort into, are worth more than a facebook page filled with hundreds of “friends” that aren’t really there for you.

Dark Chocolate: Why I love it and You Should Too!!

So I have been a fan of dark chocolate for years, and as we all know, most people have a craving for it on occasion. I just want to state that I am a big supporter and I always recommend it to patients to help fulfill their craving for sweets and simple refined carbs, but the following are amazing research studies that have been done, to show that there is so much more to the chocolate than meets the eye.
The most important factor to remember here is that the chocolate has to be dark, and raw or cold processed to obtain all the nutritional benefits from it. The Winter Breakfast Blues……

So as the winter is coming, and its getting colder in the mornings, here are some good alternative suggestions on what to eat for breakfast to fill your tummy with nutrition and warm your center before braving the cold.

1. Egg-spectations: I am a big fan of eggs in the morning, so I will take 1 cup of Organic Free Range Egg whites and mix in 2 Organic Free Range eggs with the yolk. I usually put in about 1 cup of a fiber filler veggie like spinach, kale, red or yellow pepper, or mushrooms to bring the complex carbs to the table. You don’t need to add milk, oil or butter to your eggs. They will cook just fine in a non stick pan.
After my eggs and veggies are done, I’ll top them off with 1 tablespoon of EVOO to make sure I’ve gotten my good fats in for this meal and sometimes I’ll get adventurous and sprinkle a pinch of White Truffle Salt from William Sonoma to add great flavor.

2. Soup-spectacular: So most people don’t think about the idea of having a bowl of hearty soup for breakfast, but I have to say it is is quite a delicious way to start your day. my top soups would be: Hearty Vegetable, Green Goddess, Beet/Turnip/Parsnip, Butternut Squash and Sweet pea.

What to avoid for the winter breakfast rush…….. Oatmeal which can rarely be completely Gluten-Free, and is one of the fastest ways to weight gain and spiked sugar levels. It goes in fast, and your energy crashes soon after. 3232598359_48d2f52d9a

The Dreaded Case of Mystery Food Poisoning!!

First of all, the tough thing with food poisoning, is that we’re never really sure if we’ve been hit by a case of a mystery flu/virus or have actually gotten a case of food poisoning. And in the case of either, when vomiting and diarrhea are in full storm, i think everyone would agree, we don’t care which it is. We JUST NEED TO GET BETTER!!!

So one of the most miraculous things that can be used to help alleviate the explosions and calm the body down, is a good healthy dose of Colloidal Silver.

Colloidal Silver although it gets a bad wrap for the crazy blue man pictures, is a very safe, effective, way of dealing with these issues.

So lets just step back to the last time I woke up in the middle of the night with that dreaded feeling in my tummy, I knew what was about to happen and I needed to make a choice. After a good deal of researching this treatment method I have to say its not exactly clear what the optimal dosage is for a person, child, body weight, etc. But let’s go with this rule of thumb…..

2 oz of colloidal silver liquid, consumed once an hour, until the symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting have subsided, is a good place to start. If your treating a kid, I would say Id probably cut that down by 50%. Again there is no exact science to the dosages. After the symptoms are under control I would cut the doses down by half again for a few hours until your back to normal.

As for the scary blue man who has spent years consuming abnormally large doses of Colloidal Silver non-stop, I believe this is not a major concern. A good rule of thumb would be don’t drink colloidal silver on a daily basis, for preventative reasons more than about a week or so.

Practitioners contend that by correcting this muscle weakness, you can help heal a problem in the associated internal organ.
